HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL                       September 2, 2010

A Note from Mrs. O'Brien

Welcome Back! It's amazing how fast the summer months fly! I'd like to take a few minutes to tell you about some of the changes that have taken place at Holy Family School over the summer. If you have not seen the newly renovated office, you will be in for a real treat. Who would have guessed that beautiful hardwood floors were hiding underneath the carpet?! My office is not located in the main office, and Mrs. Jung, the school nurse, has been relocated to Sr. Brenda's old office. The school building itself, has been given a thorough cleaning, painting, and polishing. This year we welcome 31 new students, giving us a current enrollment of 176. Along with new student faces, you may see some new adult faces around the building. I know you will make these new staff members feel welcome and a part of our school family:

Intervention Specialist: Mrs. Amy Parker

Math Specialist: Mrs. Irene Sakelos

Parish Secretary: Mrs. Maureen Griffin

Maintenance Worker: Mr. Ralph Spence

Bookkeeper: Mr. Shaun Martin

Holy Family has been blessed with some good news; Mrs. Harmon, the school librarian, was awarded two grants this summer. The Target Grant for $2000 will be used for a reading readiness program. The second grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for $4879.74 will be used to automate the school library and purchase a web-based Accelerated Reading Program. Sister Margaret was also awarded a grant this summer form Learning Links. This grant will provide transportation for a field trip to the Mother House her students will be taking this year. Congratulations to both of these ladies!

Thank you to the parents who helped monitor morning drop offs on the first three days of school. By Friday it was noted that most parents were following the proper drop off procedures as outlined in the school handbook. It is imperative that all students be dropped off in the back of the building. Safety is our number one concern and dropping off in the back is the best way to ensure your child and/or yourself will not get hit by a passing car. This also helps to keep traffic moving on Price for people who are simply trying to get to work. Students arriving after 7:30 are considered tardy and may only enter the building via the front entrance after 7:30am. When picking up students in the afternoon, all car riders must be picked up in the back lot. Please be watchful of students when you are back out of your parking space.

If you are looking for a way to become involved at Holy Family, why not join us for the first Parent Group Meeting. The meeting will be held tonight, in the school building, and begins at 7:00pm. Bring a friend or make some new ones. What a wonderful way to meet other parents and do something to help our students and teachers at the same time.

As we being September, I want to thank you, parents, for all you do for your children and our school. Parents are the backbone of any school. Without a join effort, student learning is slowed and success comes less frequently. On the same note, I ask that you keep in mind that students do best when they are given responsibility for their own learning. This responsibility needs to be age appropriate and monitored throughout the year. At dinner time, talk with your son or daughter about their day, their successes, and their frustrations. Working through things together makes it easier on everyone. Don't forget that the Holy Family Staff is here to help you and your child have a successful year, so please call us if you need anything. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year and wish you the same.

Peace be with you,

Mrs. O'Brien
